The Fourth Plinth: Who’s Next?

It’s time for the spotlight to be on something new in Trafalgar Square, and the latest installation to be unveiled by the Fourth Plinth Programme is set to fade the iconic column into the background again. Sorry Nelson.
Following the most recent art project by Yinka Shonibare – the sculpture of Nelson’s ship in a bottle – when it ends in 2011, a shortlist of artists have been announced and will provide an example of their work in order to win the top spot (or plinth) next year.
Artists that have been selected are Allora and Calzadilla, Elmgreen and Dragset, Katharina Fritsch, Brian Griffiths, Hew Locke and Mariele Neudecker. To get a sneak preview of their work and to root for a winner, head to the crypt of St Martin’s in the Fields from 19 Aug–31 Oct where an exhibition will be on display enabling visitors to comment on the artwork. The lucky commissioned artist will be announced by the Mayor of London early in 2011.

Indeed, The Fourth Plinth Programme is actually funded by the Mayor of London, (and also Arts Council England) and sees new art selected for the vacant plinth in a rolling programme of new commissions. It aims to get people interested in debate about public art and Boris Johnson is sure that the latest artists will get everyone talking.
The art on display will be anything from sculpture, performance, sound and images and artists are from all over the world. To find out more about each artist visit www.london.gov.uk/fourthplinth/.
