London’s Secret Gardens

Submitted by admin on July 21, 2010 – 5:00 amOne Comment

garden2London is full of hidden green spaces, so here are our pick of London’s secret gardens that even Frances Hodgson Burnett would be proud of:

1. The Phoenix Garden

Just behind The Phoenix Theatre on Charing Cross this little gem of a park is a haven for wildlife, and even boasts tropical fruit such as bananas.

Stacey Street, WC2H 8DG

2. Postman’s Park

This little memorial garden is full of tiles dedicated to unsung heroes who normally wouldn’t be commemorated. Come here for some blissful peace and calm.

King Edward Street, EC1A 7BX

3. Kyoto Garden

In Holland Park, this quaint Japanese garden is the perfect escape from the bustling city that lies outside its walls. It was refurbished in 2001 and remains the one of the most tranquil spots in the city.

4. St. Dunstan-in-the-East

Greenery spills through the derelict medieval ruins of this church, possibly making this the city’s most sequestered spot. Gloriously cinematic.

St. Dunstan’s Hill, EC3R 8DX

5. Westminster Abbey Cloisters and Gardens

The Little Cloister has a garden and ornamental fountain, while the College Garden contains a seventeenth-century knot garden. Both are intimate escapes from the busy tourist areas nearby.
